» Themes/Technology and learning/IT Courses Barriers to going on IT courses In the research for Getting IT right, we talked to people who had not done an IT course. The majority of those people did want to do a course, and they were asked what the things were that had stopped them from enrolling on an It course. The results are in the table below.
The issues coming up here are broadly similar to those issues which are barriers to learning generally. The two most important issues with regard to IT courses are cost and priority. People think that a course would be too expensive for them, and they also say they ‘haven’t got round to it’, suggesting that getting on a course is not a priority for them. In terms of the practicalities of courses, only a third felt that a lack of information was a barrier, although this is a significant minority who are struggling to find out about courses. Just over a quarter felt that courses weren’t on at a suitable time for them, and only ten percent that travel was problematic. Only a small number saw a lack of childcare as a barrier, but this figure should be balanced against the smaller proportion of the population who would need it. Although there are some difficult issues here, such as lack of confidence and being put off learning by bad experiences, many of the issues are fairly easy to solve. With IT skills being so important to life and work, and so many people keen to do them, it is important that these barriers are overcome.
