» Themes Influences on participation This section contains information on all the issues that encourage people to participate in learning, or discourage them from getting involved. This covers enablers and barriers to learning, motivations behind wanting to do courses, as well as ways that people could be encouraged to get involved in learning. Barriers and Enablers looks at the wide range of issues which can act as barriers and/or enablers to learning which have an effect on people's lives. We have found that many of these can actually both prevent people from engaging Motivations: why do people want to learn? explores the reasons behind why people may want to engage in learning as an adult. Age and stage in life can influence people's attitudes towards learning, and whether or not they are likely to engage in learning. This section investigates some of the life stages which affect people's learning journeys. School Experience looks at how people's experiences of school influence them throughout their adult lives. This is in terms of their confidence, the life choices they make and on whether they participate in learning as an adult. Learning culture suggests that areas may have cultural reasons impacting educational participation and performance, and gives some indications of such a culture in Hull. No simple answer! discusses the fact that decisions about learning are complex, but uses the idea of common triggers into learning to suggest ways providers can target their learning to those that may want to enrol. Learning and work looks at the fact that employment is an important motivator for work, and discusses issues that could have a negative impact on the journey through learning and into work.
