IT and Technology

The use of ICT in the classroom can be very powerful and beneficial to teaching and learning. However, it has been suggested that computers are not being used as effectively as they could be, and that this is to the detriment of children's learning.

Physical problems - Classroom furniture needs to be carefully considered to ensure that it is comfortable for children of different shapes and sizes (see furniture section of Inside School for more details). This is also important for the design of furniture to be used at pupils' individual workstations.

It has been argued that problems with unsuitable furniture and lighting can affect children's learning behaviour and cooperation, which may ultimately have an impact on pupils' achievement.

How technology is used - There have been concerns that many teachers are simply 'bolting on' technology to the ways in which they have always taught, rather than changing their approaches to teaching to reflect the potential of new technologies.

An example of this is interactive whiteboards, which are now heavily widespread in schools throughout the UK. Some teachers are using these as if they were simply a more exciting version of a traditional blackboard, whilst others fully exploit all of their creative, interactive potential. In addition to this, interactive whiteboards have often been installed without reference to pedagogical considerations, causing difficulties with regards to access, visibility and interactivity.

The teacher needs to 'own' the technology - For ICT to be truly embedded in the teaching and learning process, the teacher needs to 'own' the technology, incorporate it into existing pedagogy and be confident in its use. Where necessary, training should be provided not only to teachers but also to classroom support staff.
