Learning basic literacy and numeracy:

Helping people feel comfortable about learning basic skills is not always easy as there can be stigma attached to being a poor reader, or being unable to do maths.  However, learners we spoke to who were part of the Move On project in Hull were, on the whole, happy and enjoying the course.  The following factors contributed to this:

A relaxed, welcoming environment immediately puts people at ease.  Courses were run all over Hull so that learners could go to a venue that was convenient and familiar to them.  Venues were bright and clean with refreshments available for students.  Some courses were run in partnership with Sure Start who provided crèche facilities for learners' children.

Supportive and friendly tutors made taking part on the course less scary.  It also fostered a friendly atmosphere where students were able to support one another.  It was important that tutors were not critical of students if, for example, they could not make a session.  It was also key that students knew they would not be embarrassed if they needed help with a task.

Fellow students made the learning easier because they were 'in the same boat'.  This meant that people were not isolated thinking they were the only one who doing a basic skills course.  Meeting other people and the opportunity to socialise was a significant aspect of the course for some, making the learning more enjoyable.

Flexible learning enabled learners to work at their own pace.  Learners could enrol onto the programme at a point which suited them and were then given a programme of work which suited their needs.  This meant there was no pressure to keep up with other students, or frustration at the work being too slow.  Some classes had computers available so that people could learn online.  Students with internet access could also log on outside of class and access learning content to help with their course.

The learning was made enjoyable by all the above factors; friendly atmosphere, pacing the work at the right level, and providing a stimulating, challenging and supportive environment.  This helped people grow in confidence.
