» Themes/Experiences of learning The ways that different people like to learn are many and varied. However, across the different pieces of research there have emerged some themes, often in relation to a particular type of learning. Encouraging hard to reach learners looks at information we have gathered from learners on first-rung courses about the way they like to learn. These are people who have probably not done any formal learning for a long time, perhaps not since they left school, and often their experiences of school have not been very positive. What makes a good tutor discusses some of the qualities that learner's defined a good tutor by. A good tutor-student relationship was critical if learners were going to have a good learning experience. Learning basic literacy and numeracy looks at what makes it easier for people to come and improve their basic skills, given that this could often be a big step for people to take. Learning about computers took place in three different ways; through formal courses, independently, and informally from friends and family. Engaging young people in learning has the key points about what helped young people on the verge of exclusion learn during a project delivered by Rhema Youth Works. Learning through life looks at the different reasons why people liked to learn practically through experience, rather than in a more formal learning situation. |
